Gambling Addiction Costs Woman Three Years in Jail
Beryl Kay Mudgway is a resident of Brisbane, Queensland. The fifty five year old woman has a gambling addiction and was found guilty of stealing over $50,000 from her employer. The theft took place over a period of eighteen months and ended in November 2007.It was found that Mudgway was transferring money to her own bank account. She used the money to pay for holidays for family members and friends as well as paying off credit card debts. Mudgway’s lawyer, James Godbolt commented that his client took the money after she became addicted to poker machines.
It was found that Mudgway owed more than $3,000 in credit cards and $12,000 on a loan for a car. The judge, Kerry O’Brian, found the Mudgway was remorseful for taking the money and had good character in her past. O’Brian ruled that Mudgway should have a three year jail term. After she serves ten months the jail sentence will be suspended.
Ms. Mudgway is a shining example of what can happen when an addiction takes over. Family and friends should stay aware of people in their life who do gamble and make sure that they are playing responsibly and are not addicted. If they are then suggest help.
